New Study Shows A Personalized Program of Physical Exercise Is Effective in Reversing Functional Decline in the Elderly

Data from a study posted in Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) Internal Medicine shows that a personalized physical exercise program is effective in reversing cognitive and functional decline associated with the hospitalization of the elderly and can improve the quality of life.  For 3 years 370 hospitalized people over 75 years of age participated in a twice daily 20 min controlled and individualized program of strength, balance and gait exercises, even during the acute phase of their illnesses. The study further emphasizes the importance of moving, instead of bedrest, and shifting the paradigm of treatment from illness to wellness. For details of the study click here.
